Too Much Heidonism

We are saying that we are poor. Well it depends on one's definition of "poor". What I simply observe in us Filipinos is that we are heidonists... we are lovers of "good time and pleasures".

We party a lot of time. Just imagine a family of 5 (average household number in the Philippines). The father is the breadwinner and earns P5,000 to P8,000 a month. The family celebrates 5 Birthday Parties annually, Town Fiesta once a year, Graduation Blowout once a year, Wedding Anniversary once a year, All Soul's Day annually, Christmas Day celebration once every year, New Year's Day yearly, Death Anniversary of kins yearly... to mention a few (12 of them, right). Since there are 12 months in a year, it means that the family celebrates at least one occasion every month. If the family spends P5,000 per occasion, do you think something is left for education, food, electricity and other basic necessities? Whoah! Nothing's left, that's why every family of 5 in the above income category resorts to "utang" or credit and loans.

Real progress will come from us... through discipline in every aspect of our life. No one's leading the Filipinos towards genuine progress through family discipline, but instead leaders give promises of a progressive year through dole-outs, government loans etc... just like dogs barking at the wrong tree.
